Kelly Grimes has been a physiotherapist for 14 years and has spent the last 6 years immersed in the world of scoliosis. Kelly is trained at the C2 level of the BSPTS Concept by Rigo method and Level 2 of the SEAS approach.

Jocie Zenner Strom, CPO

Mentee Coordinator
Jocie is a Certified Orthotist/Prosthetist and serves as our Mentee Coordinator. She was diagnosed with scoliosis when she was in middle school, and she went through two years of bracing treatment.

A Guide to Enhancing Well-Being and Cultivating Community

Living with scoliosis involves more than understanding the basic facts about your spinal curvature—it's about embracing your journey, overcoming challenges, and leveraging the strength of community support. With a focus on awareness and the solidarity of shared experiences, you can navigate life with scoliosis confidently and connect with those who can truly relate to your situation.


Adapting to Daily Life with Scoliosis

Whether you're under observation, committing to a regimen of physical therapy, exploring bracing options, or contemplating surgery, the priority is your comfort and long-term health. Navigating day-to-day life with scoliosis has its set of challenges and triumphs. First and foremost, remember that you’re still you. Your dreams, your passions, your friends, those haven’t changed with a scoliosis diagnosis.

You might experience pain or feel constrained in your involvement in activities you love. Concerns about body image or the visibility of a brace are definitely valid, and you should share them with those you love and trust the most. Yet, with innovative treatment plans and the development of custom, less intrusive braces, it's entirely possible to continue an active, enjoyable lifestyle. Acknowledge your resilience—scoliosis is a part of you, but it certainly does not define all that you are or will become.


Mastering Bracing

For many of you, a scoliosis brace is an integral component of your treatment plan, specifically designed to stabilize and correct your unique spinal curve. Adapting to wearing a brace requires patience as your body and mind adjust. One of the easiest ways to do that is to choose a pattern for your scoliosis brace that you love. Check out this new tool to see what different patterns will look like on your orthosis.

Give your brace your own unique style. You can request colored straps, or just illustrate your own artwork on the white straps. Add stickers with motivational words, or things that make you smile. Putting your individual touches on your brace makes it more like a suit of armor than a sterile medical device.

Physical discomfort is a common initial hurdle, but remember the more you wear your brace, the more your body will adapt, and the treatment will be more effective. Wearing a spinal orthosis will disrupt your routine at first, but overcoming that adversity ultimately makes you stronger than the curve. Remember that it's normal to experience a shift in body image or self-confidence.

Yet, with time, the brace can become a trusted partner in your journey, just one of many tools and resources that contribute to a more aligning future.

Discussing your experiences with family, friends and your teachers not only educates, but also paves the way to a more receptive and accommodating environment. By talking to others, you can diminish feelings of solitude and tackle persisting myths about scoliosis together. Immersing yourself in a support group of peers who truly "get it" can be a game-changer. Here, you can freely exchange personal insights, ranging from the most comfortable ways to wear your brace to effective strategies for managing discomfort. Beyond practical advice, these support groups are a source of continuous encouragement, particularly through trying times. Groups like Higgy Friends, Curvy Girls and of course Scolios-us have wonderful mentorships and support networks to allow fun and freedom while you navigate your scoliosis journey. Who knows, you might just make lifelong friends and want to give back to others who are just beginning their scoliosis journey.
