My Scoliosis Story – Ryan Arter

My Scoliosis Story - Ryan Arter

Hi Everyone,

My name is Ryan and I underwent three major back surgeries between 2008 to 2015. I was first diagnosed with Scoliosis early on in middle school along with Kyphosis in high school. My very first back surgery was at the end of my 9th grade year of high school in 2008. It was a 12 hour surgery and I spent the following month in the hospital for rehab. The total recovery time was around 8 months to get back to normal in which I could walk on my own, bike, drive and enjoy life again.

A few years later, I had my second back surgery in 2011. It was a 6 hour surgery due to Kyphosis with a recovery time of around 5 - 6 months. Finally, my third surgery happened in 2015. This was actually an emergency surgery to fix the upper broken rods in my back. It was another 6 hour surgery but with a much quicker recovery time of 3.5 months. Thankfully, I was both mentally and physically stronger before the third surgery.

Today, during my free time I enjoy biking and walking my dog, Pearl. In conclusion, relearning how to walk after each surgery wasn't easy, but I persevered through the many months of rehab and physical therapy to build a better me. Also, I wanted to say a special Thank You to all the AMAZING Doctors, Nurses and medical workers at UCSF and John Muir Hospitals in Northern California.
